CHARACTER NAME: Barbara “Oracle” Gordon
FANDOM: DC Universe
CANON: After Birds of Prey #4 (The latest run not the one written by Chuck Dixon back in the 90s)
WHAT THEY LOST: Her memories of being Batgirl. It is very important to her because that was her start into the life of a caped crusader putting away criminals. Those memories are precious to her. Even though she says she can move forward, the days when she was able to walk were ones that she appreciates and wishes she could experience them again.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Barbara Gordon was born to Rover C. and Thelma A. Gordon in Ohio. She lost her mother when she was a preschooler and slowly she lost her father to grief and alcoholism. He died when she was a preteen and then she left Ohio (and her best friend Marcy) to go to Gotham City to live with her uncle and aunt. She is the niece to James and Barbara Gordon.
After she moved to Gotham, she learned that her uncle (and soon adoptive father) was not just a regular cop. He was in close contact with the Batman! Inspired by both her ambition and worship, she set out to train herself to become Batman’s partner and didn’t waver from her goal till she entered college and set herself on a more realistic dream.
To relive her childhood dream, she created a fully functional ‘Batgirl’ costume to wear at the policeman’s masquerade ball. But on her way to the party she witnesses a crime in progress and she decided to leap into action. This is where her career started as the crime-fighter known as Batgirl. She decided to continue her crime-fighting career because she wanted to help people and the adrenaline rush.
So she started going out at night as Batgirl, looking for trouble and putting a stop to whatever illegal activity she could. It wasn’t long before Batman (or her father) figured out who she really was. Confronting her and making her stop proved to be a difficult task, as Batman expected. But in the end she managed to convince Batman to train her.
For quite a number of years she continues to fight crime. Sometimes she would team up with her mentor, Batman, or with Robin. And on the few occasions she will meet with other superheroes such as Superman and Supergirl. She has teamed up with Supergirl a couple of other times to take down a common enemy.
Eventually Barbara decides to retire from crime-fighting. Speculation would say that she retired due to her own self doubts at being a crime-fighter. But even then she couldn’t escape the costumed villains of her past. It was one night that the Joker came to her door and shot her, which crippled her.
Her career as Oracle (an all knowing information broker for superheroes) began by accident. After the Joker crippled her, she hid herself away from the world and wouldn’t go out except for physical and emotional therapy sessions. But she quickly became restless with that routine and she decided to put her talents to something productive. Using her researching skills and the grant she received from Wayne Foundation, she decided to spend her free time solving one of her father’s cases. She didn’t want her wheelchair to be a hindrance to her so she picked up escrima, the Philippine art of stick fighting, with martial arts master Richard Dragon.
While learning this discipline, she honed her body and rebuilt her confidence. This time she wouldn’t be copying Batman or any other superhero. Instead she was able to establish her own identity because no one else does what she does. She is also a reliable resource to Batman, Robin and Nightwing. She is also one of the few heroes that operates within Gotham and has Batman’s approval.
She has her own team, which is called the Birds of Prey. The original team consisted of her and Black Canary. At first Barbara kept her at a distance. They didn’t even meet until Barbara was at a near death experience and Black Canary had to come and rescue her. After a while the team accepted Huntress and then Lady Blackhawk joined as well. After the events of Blackest Night, it seems Hawk and Dove were another addition to the team.
When Cassandra was picked to be the next Batgirl (after Huntress attempted to be her during No Man’s Land), she offered her support and acts like a mother figure to Cassandra. After Bruce Wayne’s ‘death’, Cassandra gave up the mantle of Batgirl to Stephanie Brown. At first, Barbara was against it but after Steph ran into Scarecrow she was able to accept her as the new Batgirl and agreed to help mentor her in a similar role that Dick is to Damian.
Barbara is stronger than she realizes, and that could also play into being her weakness. She is defensive about her disability, and because of that she has (possibly) over-compensated for it. She doesn’t accept support or aid of any kind due to her determination to be self-reliant. Even though she is self-reliant she has the support of Batman/Bruce Wayne, whether she wants it or not. It’s quite a feat to be able to operate in Gotham with Batman’s approval.
She joined the Suicide Squad as an anonymous computer whiz at first. She originally joined them in hopes that they could help her in getting her old life back. She holds a lot of bitterness to not being able to return to her old life but when she is offered the opportunity, she declines. It seems her pride and desire to keep her own identity as Oracle has prevented her from returning to her old life.
She is an incredibly intelligent woman that always has a calm head on her shoulders, and is very strong. She has a good conscious on her and she loves the adrenaline rush. She has some insecurity about herself, more specifically her identity. When she first started as Batgirl she was okay with being in Batman’s shadow but once she became older she realized that she wanted to establish her own identity, and that may be one of the reasons that she retired from being Batgirl.
Her determination to do well no matter what caused her to create her new identity as Oracle. She still has insecurities about herself, especially now that she is paralyzed. It seems since being confined to a wheelchair she has closed herself off to people. As I said previously, she wasn’t that close to Black Canary at first. They were just partners that spoke through a computer screen.
There are several times that Barbara wishes that she could do more and stop putting Dinah (Black Canary) in so much danger. Even though her and Dinah work together constantly, she seems to prefer keeping her at a distance, and saying that their relationship is fine the way it is, which is through a computer screen. She also established an online relationship with Ted Kord (Blue Beetle), and he was eager to meet her in person but she kept putting it off because she preferred talking to him through a computer instead of in person.
She is incredibly stubborn and hates relying on others. She doesn’t have any handles on her wheelchair because she doesn’t like to be pushed. She would rather rely on herself than on anyone else. She is still bitter about not being able to do simple things like walk, run or turn on the bathtub with her toes. But she knows that there is no use living in the past. She has said to Dick, “Y’know, a lot of the time its like you Batguys want me to hold on to the past because you can’t get over it. Understand—I have.”
When she isn’t discussing capes and cowls though, she tosses quips quite easily. Unlike Batman, she can appreciate life and happiness.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Barbara Gordon had absolutely no idea where she was. Nor did she know what was going on or what was going to happen. The whole concept of not knowing was foreign to her. Very foreign. She couldn’t remember the last time that she felt this. Not knowing the answer to something and what the immediate solution was.
Barbara didn’t have her usual artillery of resources. She couldn’t use her network of information to figure a way out of this; mainly because it wasn’t here. The best solution she could come up with was to sit and wait. Waiting was not something she cared for when she didn’t know what was happening.
After Joker shot her, Barbara didn’t just wait. Yes, she had a brief pity party but soon with a little of Bruce’s help she was able to put her life back into perspective. She had the set-up at the clock tower and Black Canary was the redhead’s first operative and her first best friend. One of the few people she let in after her accident. She was a mother figure to Cass, and she helped her to take on the mantle of Batgirl. She had more operatives on her team and they too became her friends and she let them in.
Barbara didn’t know anyone here. That would probably make normal people be afraid and uncertain. Not her. She was strong. And she wasn’t going to sit there and wait. She was going to do something. She may not be able to find her way home but she could establish a life here. The same thing she did after the Joker shot her. She wasn’t going to be a victim again.
FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: I’m trying to look on the bright side of situations. I’m in a new place…where I don’t know anything about it. But…at least this place is wheelchair accessible. Glad to see that different worlds acknowledge the fact that some people are disabled. Hopefully this place has technology that I am familiar with.
Especially if I want to set up similar facilities to what I’m used to…
Where’s Bruce to give me his wonderful pep talks?
INTENT: Barbara is a very strong and independent character and I can see her creating herself an identity in Paradisa the same way she had in Gotham. It’ll be a little harder since she doesn’t have the resources that she did back home but she would definitely establish her Oracle alias here and hopefully gain some trustworthy operatives and friends.
